Aquatic Safety

Learn to swim

If you plan to be around water you need to learn to swim.  Many of us spend our recreation time in and around water.  Going to the lake or river for a picnic or just to relax.  We find ways to cool off in the water, go boating or fishing.  Yet how many of us think about what we would do if someone got in to trouble in the water or took a surprise plunge?  Having basic swimming skills can help someone  overcome the panic of suddenly being in water where they can not touch the ground.  You do not have to learn fancy swimming strokes or go off of a diving board.  Basic skills like, floating and treading water can be enough for some people.

Always learned from a certified instructor that knows basic aquatic principles and stroke techniques.  Better yet find one who has patience and a teaching style that you can benefit from.  For children these  things are even more important.  Make sure the location has a lifeguard on duty as well.

Some places that are a great place to learn are:  American Red Cross YMCA

Water safety story for children

This story teaches basic water safety principles with the Hydro Hippo.  There is a coloring sheet for you if you make it to the end.

Lifeguarding

Want to be a lifeguard?  Do you have what it takes?  Lifeguarding is an important job.  It takes constant training, physical fitness, knowledge, customer service, safety prevention and the ability to react appropriately in an emergency.  My favorite quote about lifeguarding is:  "Lifeguarding is hours and hours of boredom interrupted by a few minutes of terror."
